High-throughput backend for a global trading broker

XM is one of the world's largest online trading brokers, with more than 20 million users. I worked on the backend: trading systems, API development, and platform reliability.

At this size, throughput and reliability are the product. A trading backend has to stay responsive when the market moves and everybody arrives at once, and it has to keep being correct while it does - a slow path and a wrong balance are both outages as far as a trader is concerned.
